Background

I think this was asked for at the last AGM (2007), and a friend asked me to check out password-protection for his site.

This page is protected at a very basic level. You may have noticed that the dialog box requesting the username and password warned you of this. To make this area a bit more secure would require my ISP (Madasafish) giving me greater access to their servers and they won't do it (I did ask). To make this page as secure as online stores will require more work and may not be possible. I looked at Secure Sockets Layer (SSL, the s in https) but it seems to need Server-side scripting, which most ISPs don't allow - mine being one of them (I did ask).

No one will get to these pages by accident or via a search engine but someone with a good knowledge of web technology could access them. It would mean finding hidden files on the server and cracking an encrypted password - hardly worth the effort for our website.

The main drawback at present is that the password is only asked for once per browser session, and a session is only ended by exiting the browser. This means that you can go off and visit another site and when you visit the members page again you will not be asked for the password. This is not a magor drawback for home users but it does mean that users on shared PCs (at school maybe) need to be sure to close the browser before leaving the PC - closing the browser is the only way to securely log-out at present.
